I never thought I’d be here.
Not just writing a blog (though that was never part of the plan).
But after finding myself swept up in a large reduction-in-force at a company I’d been with for over two decades, I realized I needed to update more than just my resume. The job market had changed, and I needed to adapt. And as I started navigating the brave new world of the contemporary job search, I found that I was far from alone.
During a 30-day LinkedIn posting challenge, I discovered something unexpected. I missed writing. But more than that, I missed taking the time to craft something that was wholly my own. Taking time to reflect, laugh, and yes, sometimes complain.
Barking at Squirrels is the end result. The idea started as an exploration of career reinvention in midlife. But it’s also about lifelong learning, curiosity, and maybe a personal project or two.
It’s about taking pleasure in new things and experiences. Embracing change. Even the annoying parts.
The first lesson was learning how to create a website. Fortunately, setting this up fell in the sweet spot between technical and creative. I’ve had fun with it, and that’s the best way to start something new.
Some days I might talk about resumes or the challenges of an online job search. Other days it might be tech, music, or the weirdness of modern work culture.
I’m willing to admit that I’m still figuring it out.
And thankfully, I’ve discovered I’m in good company.
If you’re also figuring things out, I’d love to hear your story. Leave a comment, subscribe if you want to hear more, or just pop in from time-to-time to see what I’m up to.
